Your first American mahjong set: what is in the box, and what costs extra?
Before buying a beautiful box, ask the group which rules and annual card they use. Then separate the tiles, handling accessories and current card from optional decorations.

Start with the group’s game
“Mahjong” names more than one ruleset. If your group plays American mahjong using the National Mah Jongg League card, confirm that exact requirement. Do not buy a different variant’s set based on the total tile count alone, and do not assume a printed instruction booklet replaces the annual card.
Yellow Mountain Imports’ American guide describes 152 tiles used in play, dice and an NMJL score card, with racks strongly recommended and pushers preferred. It says the card is not included. Optional scoring pieces and a wind indicator should follow the group’s practice.

The three boxes below supply 166 tiles: their extra flowers, jokers and blank spares account for the difference. This does not mean every American box must have 166 tiles or every other variant has one universal count.

The subtotals include one $14 standard 2026 NMJL card from the League’s current mail-order form, which lists the large card at $15.

Verify the Ivory Pinstripe, Ivory Ridge and Jade Horizon inventories for the exact box. All list 30 × 23 × 13 mm tiles and letters/numerals as well as traditional characters. That supports a paper size comparison, not a tested readability winner.
Decide how many cards your purchase needs
One card in the table is for a buyer who needs one. If you are equipping four players who each need a standard card, the card input is $56; do not quietly reuse the one-card subtotal. Large cards for those four would be $60. Confirm the edition and what the other players already own.
The League form covers its 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 membership year and includes shipping and handling for its listed items. That does not include a separate manufacturer’s box shipping or resolve every tax input. Read the checkout and current order terms; this guide gives no tax or international-payment advice.
A gift and total-outlay checklist
- Ask the recipient or group which game and card edition they use.
- List playable tiles and spares separately.
- Check whether racks, pushers and the card are already owned.
- Compare a life-size tile-size template and clear symbol photographs with the recipient; do not assume ornate artwork is easier to read.
- Add the needed card count, any genuinely missing handling equipment, set shipping and checkout tax.
- Verify dispatch timing if the set is a dated gift.
- Keep mats, decorative covers and upgraded cases optional unless they solve a known need.
Borrowing a club set for the first sessions can avoid buying before you understand the rules and handling you prefer. None of these three documented bundles is a quality ranking, and a higher box price does not establish better play.
