Dimmable GU10 LEDs still flicker? Match the bulb, dimmer and count

Before buying another box of dimmable GU10 bulbs, identify the exact bulbs and dimmer already fitted, then count how many lamps that dimmer controls. Those details let a supplier or electrician check a real combination. “Philips GU10” and “LED-compatible dimmer” leave too much unspecified.

Published .

This guide covers replaceable mains-voltage GU10 LEDs on a wall dimmer. It does not cover every spotlight system, integrated LED fitting or low-voltage transformer arrangement. If you cannot identify your setup safely from packaging or paperwork, leave that identification to an electrician.

Write down four things before shopping

Start with the original bulb box, order confirmation and any dimmer installation paperwork. Record:

  1. The bulb’s full manufacturer code. Include its wattage, colour and beam-angle variant, rather than copying only the shop’s product title.
  2. The dimmer’s exact model code. A brand or a photograph of a white knob is not a complete specification.
  3. The number of bulbs controlled together. Count the group on that dimmer, rather than every spotlight in the room.
  4. The actual LED wattage of the group. Multiply the number of identical bulbs by the electrical wattage printed for one bulb.

Keep a note of whether all bulbs are identical. A mixture accumulated through individual replacements needs its own assessment; a compatibility result for one lamp type is not evidence for that mixed group.

Do not remove the switch plate to find a code. If the paperwork is missing, ask your electrician to identify the installed model and its rating. Renters can ask their landlord or managing agent for that information before spending money on replacements.

A specific six-bulb example

Page 19 of Signify’s Q3 2026 professional dimmer compatibility list includes this combination:

  • Bulb: Philips MAS LED spot VLE D 6.2-80W GU10 927 36D
  • Bulb code: 9290020595
  • Dimmer: Varilight JQP401W
  • Worked example: six identical bulbs

For that lamp group and dimmer, the matrix shows a green recommendation for 1–20 lamps and a reported dimming range of 88%–0%. Six falls within that listed count. These are manufacturer laboratory results, not our own installation test or a guarantee for your home.

Exact codes matter here: the same page’s 4.9 W group containing 9290013503 has a red dimming-range result with this dimmer. A similar-looking Philips GU10 is therefore not a verified substitute for the example. Check the column header as carefully as the dimmer row.

Check the dimmer limit separately

The six bulbs in the example draw 6 × 6.2 W = 37.2 W. Use 6.2 W for this calculation, not the 80 W halogen-equivalent description. “Equivalent” describes the replacement being marketed; it is not the LED’s electrical load.

The current Varilight JQP401W product sheet, carrying an issue date of 20 September 2026 when checked, specifies a maximum LED load of 120 W. The worked example is below that limit.

A compatibility matrix does not override the dimmer’s own rating. For instance, 20 bulbs at 6.2 W would total 124 W, exceeding that 120 W maximum. A lamp-count result and a wattage limit must both be satisfied.

For an existing installation, check the documentation and label for the actual unit supplied. Varilight’s V-Pro instructions say not to exceed the maximum wattage per gang stated on the product label. Do not assume that an older dimmer has the same specification as today’s website listing.

Treat the example as a checking method

The exact bulb’s Lightbulbs Direct listing showed it out of stock when checked on 9 October 2026. This is a documented matching example, not an available shopping bundle.

If a supplier proposes a replacement, ask for the new manufacturer code and compatibility evidence for your dimmer and bulb count. “The updated version” is a useful starting point for that conversation, but it is not the answer to the compatibility question.

A practical message to a supplier is: “I have this dimmer model and this many GU10 lamps. Can you confirm a currently available bulb code supported for this combination, and the applicable LED load limit?” Attach photographs of the packaging or paperwork you already have. You should not need to open electrical fittings to make the enquiry.

Before placing an order, also ask about returns if the recommended combination proves unsuitable. Keep the written recommendation and packaging so you can identify what was supplied.

Note when the flicker happens

Use the normal wall control to observe the symptom, without opening or modifying anything. Useful details include whether flicker occurs only at the lowest setting, throughout the range, or at high brightness; whether one bulb or the entire group is affected; and whether it began after a particular replacement.

These observations help an electrician investigate. They do not prove that the bulbs, dimmer or wiring are the cause.

For some V-Pro models, the manufacturer describes adjustable minimum and maximum brightness and different operating modes. Its instructions say that raising the minimum may help low-level flicker, while high-level flicker may call for a lower maximum. Any adjustment must follow the instructions for the exact model and version. The manufacturer’s V-Pro instructions are the reference; a programming sequence from a different dimmer is not a universal fix.

What to leave to an electrician

Have a qualified electrician assess an unidentified dimmer, persistent flickering or any work involving switches, wiring or fittings. Stop using affected lighting and seek help if there is scorching, a burning smell, sparking or another sign of damage. Do not try a bypass component, wiring modification or improvised extra load to make the dimmer behave.

Electrical Safety First recommends using an electrician registered with a government-approved scheme for electrical installation work at home. If you rent, report the issue to your landlord or managing agent and agree the next step before arranging changes to the installation.

The useful outcome is a complete specification: the exact lamp, the exact dimmer, the number of lamps and their real load, followed by an installation check where needed. That gives you a much better basis for the next purchase than another packet carrying only the word “dimmable”.
