Electric blanket timer: auto-off or a scheduled start?

UK feature guide; documentation checked 14 October 2026.

If you want a blanket to begin warming at a particular time, an “auto-off timer” does not establish that feature. Check separately whether the controller can schedule a start, what it does after mains power returns, and whether the manufacturer permits your intended use. Do not assume a smart plug is an approved solution for an unidentified blanket or controller.

Dreamland’s current FAQ illustrates why this matters: it describes switch-off durations and a power-restoration behaviour for specified throw/Scandi/Snowed In controls, noting that the latter differs from previous controls. That is useful information about a controller family, not permission for every Dreamland product. Dreamland: How to use controls

Three features to distinguish

Auto-off duration: heating ends after a selected interval. This answers “How long will it stay on after I start it?”

Restored settings after a power interruption: the controller returns to particular settings when electricity returns. This answers a different question from whether it has a clock or schedule.

Scheduled start: the product’s supported controls let you arrange for heating to begin later. Look for an explicit description of that function and its conditions; do not infer it from a timer icon.

An illustrative request such as “start at 6:30 a.m.” needs the third behaviour, or a manufacturer-approved combination that expressly provides it. “Switch off after three hours” alone does not meet it.

Why the controller generation matters

In the FAQ checked for this guide, Dreamland describes 1-, 3- and 9-hour switch-off settings. It says a normal switch-on uses the default preheat and one-hour settings, while restoring removed mains power recalls the values in use when power was removed. It mentions this change as useful for smart plugs or timers. Dreamland control FAQ

Do not buy from an older second-hand listing or follow another owner’s instructions on the assumption that an identical range name means identical controls. Match the blanket label and controller reference to the current instructions.

Ask a precise question before buying

Give the manufacturer the product and controller references and ask:

  • Can this exact combination start heating at the time I want?
  • Does it require me to press a button after power returns?
  • Is an external timer or smart plug permitted for this model, and under what conditions?
  • Is the proposed preheating or overnight use permitted, including the required placement and settings?

Dreamland says manuals are linked from individual product pages. We found the current Nap Time Blue/Grey manual link, but its hosted PDF could not be retrieved. We therefore have not verified a model-specific external-timer setup and do not recommend one here. Dreamland: Finding your manual

Keep the intended use as the deciding rule

Electrical Safety First advises following the manufacturer’s instructions, checking for damage and using a blanket only for its intended purpose. A scheduling feature does not override those conditions. Electrical Safety First: Electric blanket safety

If the exact permission remains unclear, use only the documented controls and ask the maker. Do not bypass, modify or replace a controller to create scheduled heating. If all you wanted was for a manually started blanket to switch itself off, an appropriately documented auto-off model may already meet the need.
