Heat-pump dryer stops early with a few damp items

When timed drying can help, how to find it on two specific models, and which symptoms need a different response.

Published .

If your dryer handles ordinary loads but ends an automatic programme early with a few damp items, check the timed-drying instructions. Electrolux recommends that route for small or partly line-dried loads. Restarting the same sensor programme may repeat the result. Electrolux's early-stop guidance

This is a programme-choice check, not a diagnosis that your sensor is faulty. First, confirm that the clothes may be tumble dried and that the dryer has actually finished rather than paused or displayed a warning.

Match the next step to the symptom
What happened What to check next
A small or partly line-dried load ended quickly, without a warning Look up the model's timed-drying option and permitted fabrics
Most items dried but one thick item or a trapped section stayed damp Separate the remaining damp item, open out tangled laundry and check the relevant programme
Everything feels slightly damp straight after the programme Let the laundry cool before deciding it needs more drying
A tank, filter or fault warning appeared, or normal loads also fail Follow the warning and maintenance instructions before adding more drying time

Electrolux warns that smaller items can become trapped inside larger ones, and programme capacities can differ from the dryer's headline capacity. LG also advises separating thick and thin clothing. Bosch notes that warm laundry may feel damper than it is. These observations help you distinguish a load problem from a reason to keep running the entire batch. Electrolux's damp-load guidance, LG's Sensor Dry explanation, Bosch WTH85223GB manual, page 42

Dryness level and drying time are different controls

On an automatic programme, a dryness setting changes the intended result. A timed setting changes how long the programme runs. Neither is, by itself, an instruction to select more heat.

LG explains that Sensor Dry responds to the load's moisture and can end early when the load is too small. Its separate Time Dry advice is useful when the automatic result is unsatisfactory. That does not establish one drying duration for every heat-pump model. LG's Sensor Dry guidance

Also check the target you originally selected. On the Bosch model below, Iron Dry intentionally leaves some moisture for ironing. If that was the selected result, the first question is whether you chose the right target for clothes you wanted to put away. Bosch manual, page 23

Two verified examples for finding timed drying

Match the complete model number and your local manual before using either example. These controls are not brand-wide instructions.

Two verified examples for finding timed drying
Model and manual Where timed drying lives Important limit
Bosch WTH85223GB, UK manual 9001812078 Select Timed Progr. Warm and use Program Duration to set the time The programme is for pre-dried, slightly damp or thick multilayer items; maximum 3 kg, excluding wool and silk
Electrolux EDH803BEWA, Australian manual Time Dry is a touch-button option. The options table shows it with Cottons and Synthetics Its range is 10 minutes to 2 hours. Electrolux recommends a short duration for small quantities or one item; this is a range, not a recommended two-hour treatment

A timed programme can reach its selected end with laundry still damp. The timer therefore gives you a different way to finish suitable items, not a dryness guarantee. Bosch manual, page 25

For another model, use its manual to answer four questions before starting:

  • Is timed drying a separate programme or an option attached to a programme?
  • Which fabrics and load sizes does it allow?
  • Which control changes duration rather than delaying the start or end?
  • What does the manual say about cooling and removing laundry?

If the manual does not identify a suitable option, finish drying by a fabric-compatible alternative rather than guessing a button sequence.

Work through the remaining laundry once

Imagine two shirts that have spent most of the day on a line. Their labels allow tumble drying, but an automatic programme ends while they still need drying. There are no warning lights and ordinary loads usually finish properly.

That is the small, partly dried load described in Electrolux's guidance. Look up a compatible timed option, choose a short duration appropriate to the manual and check the result after the programme has finished and the clothes have cooled. You do not need to add a new wet load merely to investigate this symptom. Electrolux's small-load advice

For a mixed batch where only a thick item remains damp, remove the finished items and deal with the remainder using its permitted programme. Before the next full load, sort by drying needs and open out pieces that can trap one another. Electrolux's load-preparation advice

Allow the selected programme's cooling phase to finish. If you must interrupt drying, follow the appliance's safety instructions for immediate removal and spreading out the laundry so heat can dissipate. Don't leave a hot bundle sitting in the drum or a basket. Electrolux manual, safety information

When to stop changing programmes

An illuminated full-tank indicator needs attention. So does a dirty lint filter. Electrolux includes both checks in its early-stop guidance and recommends service if the problem persists. Follow your model's shutdown and cleaning instructions. Electrolux troubleshooting

Don't turn a small-load issue into an improvised deep clean. Advice about rinsing a removable condenser is not automatically suitable for a heat-pump dryer's heat exchanger. Use only the maintenance method in the exact manual, including its power-disconnection requirements.

If suitable timed drying also fails, or ordinary correctly loaded programmes repeatedly leave laundry wet, contact support. Record the model number, programme, dryness target, approximate load, starting dampness, elapsed time and any warning. That is more useful than reporting only that the display finished early.

This guide compares manufacturer instructions. It does not report appliance testing, measured drying times or a confirmed sensor fault.
