Meindl soles crumbling? Check the repair route and your trip date
Good-looking tread does not settle whether an old boot can be repaired. If the sole is crumbling or separating, arrange an assessment of the whole boot, ask which sole unit can be replaced and get a current quote before planning around a resole.
UK/Ireland assessment and resole-planning routes; individual model and upper suitability decided professionally, with no DIY repair assurance.

Look beyond the tread
Meindl UK’s hydrolysis explanation describes deterioration of midsole material that can cause crumbling or separation. That is a different observation from a worn tread surface. The manufacturer says flexible, uncracked uppers in good condition can make resoling possible; it does not establish that every apparently sound boot qualifies.
Do not treat this explanation as a remote diagnosis. Record what you can actually see and let the retailer or repairer decide what has failed. A photograph of intact tread alone misses the attachment between the sole and upper.

| What you see | What to show the assessor | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Tread worn smooth | The underside of each boot | Which parts of the sole unit need replacement? |
| Material crumbling or a sole pulling away | Side views, the affected join and both boots | Is the failing material replaceable on this model? |
| Cracked or stiff upper, damaged stitching or hooks | Each affected area as well as the soles | Does the upper’s condition prevent a resole or need additional work? |
A separating sole is a reason to arrange another suitable pair for a planned walk. This guide offers no glue repair or assurance that the boots are safe to use until assessment.
Use the right UK or Irish route
Meindl UK’s repair FAQs direct owners to the shop where they bought the footwear for inspection and repair advice. The distributor states it processes returns from UK and Irish retailers, or from members of the public in the UK.
The linked Bramwell resole form prefers sending through the original shop. Its direct-post instructions specify boots sent from, and returned to, a UK address. Irish owners should therefore begin with their retailer or ask the distributor to confirm the route; the UK direct-post form is not evidence of direct-post eligibility from Ireland.
If the original retailer is unavailable, use the official contact page to explain your location and circumstances before posting anything. Include the boot style, size, purchase date and seller if known. Ask where the pair should be sent and which form applies.

| Official source checked on 10 October 2026 | Displayed resole price | Displayed duration |
|---|---|---|
| Live resoling service page | £135–£155 including VAT, depending on model | Approximately 10–12 weeks |
| Resole PDF linked by that page | £117–£135, depending on model | Approximately 6–8 weeks |
These are source figures, not a quote for your boots. Before sending the boots, confirm the current total, shipping in both directions and estimated return date rather than choosing the lower figure or shorter wait. Both sources say a suitable alternative sole unit may be used if the original is unavailable.
The service page also names Ingman and Lancashire Sports Repairs as UK repair options. Their availability, prices and turnaround must be obtained separately; the factory figures above are not quotes from those repairers.
Get the whole decision in one quote
- Is this exact model and upper condition suitable for the proposed repair?
- Will the work replace the failed material, and which sole unit will be fitted?
- Are inspection, extra repairs, VAT and both directions of postage included?
- What happens, and what is payable, if the boots cannot be repaired?
- When does the estimated turnaround start, and when should the boots reach you?
- What terms cover the repair? The FAQ says a resole does not renew the original warranty.
Write your departure date beside the expected return date. An approximate multiweek service is not a workable promise for a walk next week. If repair remains worthwhile, arrange a suitable alternative for the near-term trip and decide on the resole independently of that deadline.
Prepare the parcel after the route is confirmed
The resole form requires thoroughly cleaned boots, including soles, and the completed contact details. It asks owners to remove personal footbeds and suggests retaining existing footbeds and laces as spares. Check the current instructions for your chosen route before packing, keep your photographs and retain the postage record.
