Dashcam parking mode when you barely drive: hardwire kit or dedicated battery?
A dedicated battery changes the source of parking power. It does not create energy between short trips. Start with how long you drive and how long the car sits before choosing the complete setup.

Write your real parking requirement
Record a normal week: trip duration, gap until the next trip, parking location and which intervals you actually need recorded. “Overnight” and “four days without driving” are different requirements. Also record your camera’s exact model, channel count and intended parking mode. A motion-triggered mode, low-bitrate recording and continuous recording need not consume the same power.

| Power route | What changes | Question before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Camera-compatible hardwire kit | Uses the vehicle’s electrical system under its supported parking-power controls. | Can this vehicle and starting battery support the requested parked period? |
| Dedicated dashcam battery | Stores energy for parking and requires a supported charging arrangement. | Will your driving pattern replenish enough for the next period? |
| Driving recording only | Avoids relying on continuous parked power. | Would limited parked coverage be an acceptable result? |
Neither powered route promises indefinite coverage or that the car will always start. A cutoff can end recording; wanting footage after that point does not make bypassing its protection a solution.
Match the kit to the camera, not just the USB shape
VIOFO’s current kit collection identifies separate kit families. Its listed HK4 product includes A119 MINI 2 and A229 Plus/Pro among the named cameras; HK3-C is listed for A139/A139 Pro; HK5 is listed for VS1. The collection’s copy contains inconsistent details in places, so verify the exact kit listing, camera manual and supported firmware rather than treating this as installation entitlement for every similarly named camera.
Ask an installer to confirm vehicle-specific fuse types, approved circuits, battery-management requirements and the intended cutoff or timer. This article does not prescribe a universal cutoff voltage, fuse choice, wiring sequence or warranty outcome. A Type-C plug alone cannot establish parking-mode compatibility.
A battery charging claim is not your parking runtime
VIOFO’s BP100 page lists approximately 70 minutes to charge by its hardwire input and 100 minutes by its cigarette-lighter input. Those are manufacturer full-charge claims, not Everyday Sift measurements. A twenty-minute commute is shorter than either full-charge interval; the resulting stored energy cannot be inferred by simply dividing the advertised times.
The same page’s channel/model runtime table and FAQ disagree for the A329S two-channel example. That figure is excluded here. Do not convert a single-camera headline into a guaranteed runtime for your multi-camera setup. Obtain a consistent current answer for the exact model, mode, temperature and starting charge.

| System worksheet | Record or obtain |
|---|---|
| Actual driving | ______ minutes per trip; ______ trips between parked periods. |
| Wanted parked recording | ______ hours at the locations where you need it. |
| Camera and mode | Exact model ______; channels ______; firmware and parking mode ______. |
| Pack replenishment | Supported input and installation ______; manufacturer answer for your repeated short trips ______. |
| Usable recording time | A consistent model-specific estimate ______; conditions ______. |
| Complete cost | Camera, power equipment, compatible cables, approved storage card and installation ______. |
Choose the arrangement that meets the whole cycle
If a supported hardwire arrangement provides the parked period you need and its vehicle-specific limitations are acceptable, a pack may be unnecessary. If you need isolation from the starting battery, a dedicated compatible pack merits evaluation only with a replenishment plan. If neither reaches the next required interval, reduce the requested coverage or postpone the purchase instead of assuming an expansion battery solves insufficient charging.
Use the dedicated pack within its current installation, charging and temperature instructions. Do not substitute an ordinary phone power bank left in a vehicle, or improvise external charging. Do not adjust the camera or its controls while driving.
