Amazon Kindle; marketplace differences unresolved / Decision guide
Kindle EPUB or PDF download missing? Check eligibility first
Amazon Kindle policy checked 14 October 2026; account screens can vary by marketplace.
Amazon’s EPUB/PDF download route is for verified purchasers of books whose publisher has confirmed DRM-free download access. A Kindle Unlimited loan does not qualify, even when the title is DRM-free. Start with those conditions before treating a missing download option as a browser problem. Amazon’s reader-download policy
This guide helps separate an eligibility question from a file problem. It does not promise that every Kindle book can be exported.
First decide which problem you have
- No EPUB/PDF download option: check purchase and title eligibility.
- A download starts, but the result will not open: preserve the original file and investigate the download separately.
- The file opens, but the target reader cannot use it: check that reader’s supported import formats and instructions.
Do not buy another copy or install conversion software simply because these three situations look similar.
Check the purchase and exact edition
Confirm that you are looking at the account and marketplace used for the purchase. Note the book title and edition identifier, then distinguish a bought copy from a borrowed copy in your records. Amazon identifies Manage Your Content and Devices as the download location, but we have not inspected a signed-in customer account or reproduced a download for this guide. Amazon: Reader download access
If the account’s record is unclear, ask Amazon support to check the purchase and download eligibility of that particular edition. Keep order details in Amazon’s support channel rather than posting your library or receipts publicly.
“DRM-free” still needs the relevant publisher setting
Amazon says books published before 9 December 2025 without DRM do not automatically gain the new export option: the publisher must explicitly confirm it. Publisher changes can take 24–72 hours to reach readers. Current settings affect future download availability, including for earlier purchasers; files already downloaded remain accessible after a later DRM change. Amazon: Change DRM settings
An old description or another reader’s result is therefore a reason to check, rather than proof that your download is broken. Wait for a documented setting change only when the publisher or Amazon has actually told you one is in progress.
If you received a ZIP or an unexpected file
Record the filename and extension, browser and operating system, which download action you chose, and whether the download completed. Keep an untouched copy. Give support those details without uploading the book itself to an unfamiliar conversion service.
We have not verified a universal ZIP-renaming or browser-switching fix. An absent permission cannot be repaired by changing a filename, and a file-handling problem should not be diagnosed from its extension alone.
The quickest useful question is: “Is this purchased edition eligible for EPUB/PDF download in my account?” If the answer is yes, continue with the precise file symptom. If it is no, ask about supported reading options before paying again.
