Buying a PlayStation Portal without a PS5? Check your games and game-only costs
Three UK examples show the difference between catalogue access and buying a game. The £59.99 example covers game purchases only, not the Portal, PlayStation Plus Premium or a first-year total.
You can use eligible Portal cloud games without a PS5, but you need active Premium membership. For the example below, additional game purchases are £59.99; hardware, Premium, DLC, accessories and connectivity costs are excluded. Confirm your own exact PS5 games and access route before buying.
Choose the cloud route deliberately
Sony’s UK Portal cloud support requires an adult PlayStation account and active Premium membership; Extra alone is not enough. The UK is supported, but overseas territories are excluded. Only eligible PS5 games can stream, not PS3 or PS4 versions. Availability changes by country and over time. We have not tested an account, game or network.
Remote Play uses your own PS5 and is a separate route from no-PS5 cloud streaming. Cloud streaming needs an internet connection; it is not offline play. Check both where you will use the device and your account region against the UK eligibility conditions. Premium renews automatically at the then-current Store price until cancelled.
For Portal, Sony lists minimum upload and download speeds of 5 Mbps to start a session, 7 Mbps for 720p and 13 Mbps for 1080p. These minima do not guarantee performance: the game and connection quality affect results. They are not proof that a particular connection will handle the newer High Quality mode. Keep Portal system software current; do not apply the separate PS5-console 4K speed table to this device.
Check eligibility and entitlement as two questions
The UK cloud-streaming overview separates eligible digital-library titles from catalogue access, and availability can change with region and time. For each must-play game ask: “Can this exact PS5 edition stream on Portal now?” Then ask: “Is it included in my access, already owned as an eligible digital game, or a separate required purchase?” A game’s separate purchase price is not automatically an extra cost when the relevant included route is available.

These are dated entitlement examples, not recommendations, your personal must-play list or a permanent catalogue promise. Extra catalogue inclusion does not make Extra sufficient for Portal cloud streaming: Premium is required. The subscription is not free. We have not checked a signed-in account or played these editions. Recheck your exact edition and entitlement immediately before buying.
Cyberpunk’s Ultimate Edition and Phantom Liberty expansion are separate from base-game catalogue access; do not assume they are included. Sackboy’s console local-player count is not evidence that multiple controllers can play in a Portal cloud session.
A £59.99 game-purchase example, not a complete setup cost
Checked 16 October 2026: this illustrative buyer accesses Cyberpunk 2077 and Sackboy Standard through their currently listed catalogue entitlement and buys ASTRO BOT Standard. Additional game purchases: £0 + £0 + £59.99 = £59.99. This assumes active Premium membership and continuing eligibility for the two catalogue games. The £0 entries mean no separate base-game purchase, not free access. Hardware, Premium, DLC, accessories and connectivity costs are excluded. We have not verified a complete setup or first-year total.

Make a buy-or-wait decision from your own three games
- Confirm the exact required titles, editions and access route immediately before buying; a hoped-for future release is not current eligibility.
- Budget separately for hardware, Premium, any necessary extras and connectivity; those costs are excluded from this game-only example.
- Do not buy the device on an assumption that an unconfirmed must-play game will work later. An eligible digital copy you already own may reduce additional game spending.
