Shipping-label printers: check 4 × 6, phone printing and refills separately
US manufacturer examples; specifications checked 14 October 2026. Local models and shipping services may differ.
A printer must pass three separate checks: it accepts your shipping-label format, it can receive the file from the device you use, and you can buy compatible replacement labels. “Thermal” or “wireless” alone does not answer all three.
For example, DYMO lists the LabelWriter 550 at a maximum print width of 2.4 inches, while the 5XL supports 4-inch printing and 4 × 6 shipping labels. Both belong to its Series 5 range, which works only with Authentic DYMO LW labels. DYMO’s comparison
Begin with the label your carrier actually gives you
Before choosing a printer, open a sample from the shipping service or marketplace you intend to use. Establish the page size, file type and permitted print layout. Is the label already a standalone 4 × 6 page, or embedded in a larger document?
Keep 4 × 6 inches and A6 separate when checking settings. A listing mentioning both does not tell you how your particular file will be placed on the stock. Ask the printer supplier to explain the supported route for that file, including any app or layout preparation.
Do not shrink a label to fit a narrow printer merely because the preview looks tidy. Follow the carrier’s label instructions, and establish print and barcode acceptance before relying on the workflow for parcels.
Match the exact model to the sending device
The two DYMO models illustrate the distinction:
- LabelWriter 550: DYMO documents PC/Mac printing over USB using its desktop software.
- LabelWriter 5XL: DYMO documents PC/Mac printing over USB or LAN using its desktop software.
Those documented desktop routes are not evidence of an iPhone-only workflow. DYMO: Connectivity
By comparison, Rollo describes its Wireless X1040 as a Wi-Fi and AirPrint printer that supports iPhone printing. It specifies direct-thermal stock 1.57–4.1 inches wide, including 4 × 6 labels. These are manufacturer specifications, not our results from printing a marketplace label. Rollo X1040 specifications and FAQ
For a phone-first purchase, ask the seller to name the exact steps from your shipping app’s exported file to the printer. Include your phone OS, network arrangements and printer model. A Bluetooth label-maker app and AirPrint are not interchangeable purchase promises.
Check consumables before comparing printer prices
Write down the allowed label type, dimensions and supply format, then check replacement-stock availability where you live. Rollo says the X1040 accepts third-party direct-thermal labels within its specified width range; DYMO’s Series 5 restriction is different. Rollo: Compatible labels · DYMO: Series 5 labels
Compare the delivered cost of a usable quantity, rather than the largest pack’s headline price. Include wasted labels and any required paid software only when you have verified those costs. No payback period is established here.
When buying nothing may be enough
For occasional parcels, check whether your existing printer or the selected carrier’s print service can complete the job. Confirm that option for your actual shipment before assuming a nearby drop-off point prints labels.
