Used HP printer: separate the Instant Ink subscription from cartridge rights
Buying an owned printer does not transfer the seller's Instant Ink subscription. Identify the model, plan and cartridge types before agreeing a price, and have the seller resolve any previous-account registration block with HP before handoff.
US owned printers under ordinary monthly Instant Ink: subscription and cartridge planning. Model-specific account removal and reset procedures are outside this guide.
Published .
Start with an owned printer and an ordinary monthly plan
This guide covers US purchases of hardware the seller owns with ordinary monthly Instant Ink. Rental, HP All-in, Platinum and other printer-inclusive or annual plans need their own terms. Record the full model, product number and serial number, and ask whether HP+ was activated.
The seller's subscription stays separate
HP's US terms prohibit transferring the service to another person. An HP employee's 1 October 2025 reply about an OfficeJet Pro 9015e likewise advises the seller to cancel their plan; the buyer can enroll under their own account if wanted and eligible. This is not a blanket eligibility guarantee. HP US terms, section 6; HP employee's ownership-change reply.
For ordinary monthly cancellation, the service ends on the current billing period's last day. Unplugging the printer, not printing or removing cartridges does not stop billing. Ask the seller for the confirmed effective date rather than treating collection day as the subscription's end. HP US terms, section 9.
“Ink included” needs a cartridge type
Subscription cartridges remain HP-owned and tied to the service; they are not ordinary transferable consumables. HP describes disabling them after cancellation. Separately bought replacement compatibility depends on the exact printer, including its HP+ status. Verify the intended cartridge arrangement before purchase. HP US terms, sections 5 and 9.

| Record before paying | Question to settle |
|---|---|
| Model, product number and serial number | Does the physical printer match the listing? |
| Ownership and plan type | Is this owned hardware under the ordinary monthly plan covered here? |
| Effective cancellation date | Has the seller confirmed when their subscription ends? |
| Installed and spare cartridge types | Which are subscription supplies, and which are separately purchased? |
| HP+ status and intended replacement cartridges | What does the exact model accept under the buyer's intended arrangement? |
| Previous-account or registration messages | Has the seller resolved any block with HP before handoff? |
Keep account release with the seller and HP
The buyer does not need the seller's password. If setup reports a prior owner or unresolved registration, pause the purchase while the seller obtains model-appropriate help from HP. A generic reset is not evidence that billing ended, account release succeeded or HP+ requirements changed.
This guide covers subscription and cartridge planning. It provides no account-removal button sequence, reset procedure or guarantee of release. Ask HP for instructions appropriate to the exact model and registration message.
A short message before collection
“Please confirm that you own the printer, its exact model and HP+ status, the plan's effective cancellation date and the cartridge types included. If any previous-account registration block remains, please resolve it with HP before handoff.”
No printer, account handoff or cartridge was tested. The guide is a purchase-planning checklist, not a complete resale or reset tutorial.
