Moving countries with Google Family? Plan storage before changing Play country
Leaving a Google family to unlock a country change can also remove shared storage and purchase access. Before changing anything, make a plan for each person's account. Google Play country, family membership and Google One storage are connected, but they follow different rules.

Separate the two waiting periods
Google Play currently requires at least 90 days after the initial country setup and between later country changes; additional restrictions may apply. You must be in the new country and have a payment method from it. Family membership blocks the country change. Google's instructions distinguish leaving as a member from deleting a group as its manager. Treat that as a reason to plan the consequences before acting. A Play profile update can take up to 48 hours. Google Play country requirements.
Family switching has a separate 12-month restriction. Google's family help says changing to a different family is limited to once every 12 months for users with a paid Google subscription, while leaving and rejoining the same group has no such frequency limit. Joining also requires living in the same country as the manager. A group deleted and recreated for a move should not be assumed to count as the same group. A manager or supervised member cannot simply use the ordinary member's leave procedure. Google's family membership rules.

| Record | Question to answer before changing anything |
|---|---|
| Account and roles | Which account is the family manager? Which owns the Google One plan? |
| Countries | Where does this person now live, and which country appears in Play? |
| Dates | When was Play country last set or changed? When did they last join a different family? |
| Storage | How much does their account use, and what personal capacity would remain without sharing? |
| Purchases | Which essential apps or books are personally owned, and which come from another member's Family Library? |
| Subscriptions | Who pays, through which service, on which profile, and when does the paid term end? |
| Fallback | What confirmed storage and purchase access will cover any gap? |
Keep this worksheet private: it may contain account details. You do not need to share passwords to coordinate the move.
Check individual storage, not only the family total
Google One's detailed family-storage guidance distinguishes personal space from shared space. Each member has up to 15 GB of personal storage; their files use that first, then shared capacity. Members with their own Google One storage use their individual capacity before the family's. Check each person's actual usage in Google One's Storage view and the family breakdown. Shared capacity does not give relatives access to the files themselves. How Google One storage is shared.
This is cloud capacity for Google services, not extra built-in storage on a phone. If a phone itself is full, address that local limit separately; leaving or joining a Google One family does not change the phone's physical capacity.
If sharing stops, existing files are not immediately removed simply because access to that capacity ends. An over-limit account can nevertheless lose essential functions: Gmail cannot send or receive messages, Drive cannot upload or sync new files, and Photos cannot back up new media. Arrange adequate individual capacity or a considered reduction before a gap, rather than assuming email will keep working because old files still exist. Storage changes can take time to apply. List purchases and subscriptions separately
Leaving a family removes access to other members' Family Library items; your purchases added to that library also stop being available to the others. You keep your account and personally purchased content. This is different from every family member retaining access to every shared purchase. What leaving a Google family changes.
A Play country change can affect content availability. Existing subscriptions remain on the old payment profile unless cancelled, and services may be unavailable in the destination country. Old-country Play balance cannot be spent in the new country, and Play Points do not carry across. Do not cancel essential subscriptions until you know the replacement and timing. Use a planned sequence, with account-specific help where needed
- Complete the worksheet and confirm everyone's recovery access.
- Protect important files and arrange sufficient individual storage for any interruption.
- Check destination availability and billing routes for essential subscriptions and shared purchases.
- Obtain account-specific guidance if a supervised child, recent family switch, manager deletion or uncertain rejoining eligibility is involved.
- Only then follow the current official procedure appropriate to each role.
- After changes take effect, verify each person's storage, email, essential apps and subscription access.
This is a relocation planning guide, not an account migration guarantee. Deleting a payments profile, removing accounts from devices or repeatedly creating families is not a substitute for resolving eligibility. If you also share console purchases, the separate Nintendo virtual game card guide covers that system's device allocation rules.
