Libby book missing on Kobo and what to check first

If one borrowed ebook appears in Libby but will not show up on your Kobo, check the exact edition before resetting the e-reader. A book with the same title and author in the Kobo store may still be a different edition from your library's copy.

Published .

Start by deciding whether one loan is missing or none of your current loans are arriving. That distinction gives you a useful place to investigate. It does not diagnose the fault by itself, but it can save you from repeating account setup when the problem concerns a single book.

Check that this loan can use Kobo's library feature

Libby says compatible ebooks borrowed with the same library card can appear on a supported Kobo when it syncs over Wi-Fi. Some ebook loans are incompatible, and Libby audiobooks and magazines do not transfer through this feature. Libby's Kobo reading guide.

Canada is among the countries supported by Kobo's built-in library borrowing feature. Supported models include the Libra Colour, Clara Colour and Clara BW, along with several older models. Check the full list if yours has never downloaded a library loan. An older Kobo without built-in support may instead need a compatible download transferred through a computer. Kobo's supported models and borrowing guide.

Also open Libby's Loans screen and confirm you actually have an active ebook loan. A hold waiting for availability is a different state. Write down the library that supplied the loan if you use more than one card.

If no loans arrive check the card and connection

Compare the library card used for the loan in Libby with the card connected to Kobo. Using the same email address for other accounts does not establish that the correct borrowing card is connected. Libby's instructions specifically call for the same library card. Libby account requirement.

If you need to link a card again, follow Kobo's current setup instructions. Its guide now describes adding a card through My Account, then Library Cards, and recommends the QR-code sign-in route if on-device sign-in causes problems. Follow the prompts actually shown for your account and device; older screenshots elsewhere may differ.

Next, connect the Kobo to Wi-Fi. From its Home screen, tap the Sync icon and choose Sync now. After it finishes, search for the title in My Books rather than relying only on the Home screen cover display. Kobo's Wi-Fi sync instructions.

If syncing itself fails, note the error. If syncing completes but every eligible loan remains missing, tell library support that detail. It helps separate a connection problem from a book that cannot be matched.

If one ebook is missing compare its ISBN

Hamilton Public Library explains that borrowed ebooks depend on the Kobo catalogue for syncing: the same edition needs to be available, with a matching ISBN. Matching the cover, title or author's name alone is not a reliable edition check. Hamilton Public Library's Kobo syncing guide.

Use this sequence:

  1. Open the borrowed ebook's details in Libby or your library's OverDrive catalogue.
  2. Find and copy the ISBN for that ebook edition.
  3. Search that ISBN in the Kobo catalogue.
  4. Compare the actual numbers, rather than choosing the first similarly titled result.

If you cannot find an ISBN in your app view, open the title through the library catalogue or ask library staff to help identify the borrowed edition. Do not substitute the ISBN from a paperback listing.

A missing or different ISBN points to an edition mismatch. A matching one is useful evidence for troubleshooting, not a guarantee that every other part of syncing is working. Save the two catalogue links so support can inspect the same records you checked.

There is no need to buy the Kobo edition to run this comparison. Buying another copy would be a separate decision, not a repair to the library loan.

See whether an authorised download is available

Some loans can be transferred with Adobe Digital Editions, commonly called ADE. This is an alternative worth checking when direct syncing is unavailable, but it is not offered for every title.

On a computer, open Libby in a browser and go to Shelf, then Loans. Choose Read With; if that option is hidden, open Manage Loan first. Under Other Options, look for EPUB or PDF. The available formats depend on the title. Libby's computer-transfer instructions.

For a downloadable, compatible loan, follow Kobo's current ADE setup and transfer guide. A protected download may initially be an .acsm licence file that ADE opens to obtain the ebook. Use ADE's transfer process rather than assuming the licence file is the book itself.

At this check, Kobo's guide describes a transition from Adobe ID to ByteBooks ID for authorization. It says already-authorized readers can continue until asked to sign in again. Consult that current guide if credentials or authorization block you, rather than repeatedly following an old Adobe-ID-only tutorial.

If the loan has no suitable download option, stop that route. Kobo confirms some library books lack a download option. Use the reading options offered for that loan, or ask your library whether another compatible edition is available. Kobo's library-website borrowing guidance.

Give support a small useful set of details

If the ISBN matches and the book still will not arrive, send your library's official support service:

  • The title, ebook ISBN and library catalogue link
  • Your Kobo model and any exact error wording
  • Whether other current loans sync successfully
  • Whether you checked the borrowing card and completed a Wi-Fi sync
  • Whether EPUB or PDF download options appear

Keep passwords and PINs out of screenshots. This is enough to start a focused conversation without publicly sharing your library credentials.

A reset should not be your opening move for one missing title. First establish whether you have a connection or card problem, an edition mismatch, or a loan with different reading options. Those checks give you a clearer next step while leaving your existing setup alone.
