Dyson V10 pulses after a filter wash
Check what got wet before trying again. A 24-hour wait is a minimum, not proof that the filter is dry.
Published .
If a classic Dyson Cyclone V10 starts pulsing after you wash and refit its filter, stop testing it while the filter's dryness is uncertain. Dyson requires the filter to be completely dry before refitting, with a minimum drying period of 24 hours. A damp filter can damage the motor. Dyson V10 Animal filter instructions, Dyson's filter-drying warning
This guide is for the classic Cyclone V10 with the rear twist-off filter unit. It does not cover the newer V10 Konical or assume that instructions for a V8, V11 or another Dyson transfer to your machine. Use the model details and manual supplied with your vacuum when anything differs.
First establish what was washed
“Cleaned the filter” can mean several different things. The next safe step depends on which one happened.
On small screens, scroll the table sideways.
| What happened | What to do next |
|---|---|
| Only the removed filter was rinsed; its dryness is uncertain | Leave it out and continue the approved air-drying process |
| Only the filter was washed; it is completely dry, but the machine pulses | Check the fit, indicator lights and manufacturer-approved blockage points |
| The motor body, battery or charging area was washed or may have taken in water | Stop using or charging the machine and contact Dyson before further tests |
| The machine became completely unresponsive after the cleaning attempt | Stop the pulsing troubleshooting sequence and report that change to support |
The water-exposure branch is deliberately conservative. Dyson's safety guidance tells owners to stop using a machine that is damaged, has been dropped into water or is not working as it should, and to contact support for service. It also limits maintenance to the manual or Dyson's advice. Waiting for a washed filter does not establish that wet electronics are safe. Dyson Cyclone V10 safety information
If the filter might still be damp, wait
Before handling parts, follow your machine's safety instructions for power disconnection and maintenance. Keep your finger away from the trigger. Don't operate the vacuum with the filter removed. Dyson V10 safety information
For the classic V10 Animal instructions cited here, the removed filter is dried with its open end facing up. Dyson specifies at least 24 hours and then a check that it is completely dry. Its broader filter-care guidance recommends an area with plenty of airflow, such as near a fan or open window. Keep the vacuum body away from the washing and drying area. Two conditions therefore have to be met:
- The minimum drying period has passed
- The filter is completely dry
The first does not prove the second. Dry-feeling plastic, no visible drips or a full day on the counter is not a reason to ignore damp filter material. If you are unsure, leave it out for longer; don't use the motor as a drying test. Dyson's UK V10 guidance also requires complete touch dryness before refitting. Dyson's classic V10 support page
Don't use a hairdryer or improvise a heat treatment. The approved route is air drying; the V10 instructions specifically exclude ovens, microwaves, tumble dryers and naked flames. Dyson V10 drying restrictions
If the filter needs washing again, use its model-specific instructions. The classic V10 guidance uses cold water. Do not substitute a different model's washing method just because it appears on another Dyson page. Dyson's V10 filter-washing instructions
Once it is completely dry, use the indicators to choose the check
Refit the filter as Dyson directs: return it to the open position, then rotate clockwise until it clicks into place. Don't force a damaged or mismatched part. Dyson's V10 refitting instructions
The classic V10 operating manual distinguishes these signals:
On small screens, scroll the table sideways.
| Signal | Meaning given in the manual |
|---|---|
| Intermittently flashing filter indicator | Filter unit is not fitted correctly |
| Continuously lit filter indicator | Filter unit needs washing |
| Blockage indicator, with motor pulsing | Follow the blockage-checking instructions |

If the light remains on immediately after a wash, don't enter a wash–refit–test loop. First establish dryness and correct assembly, then use the relevant troubleshooting route. A just-washed filter is a useful part of the history; it does not prove that the filter is the only cause.
For a blockage check, let the machine cool, follow its power-disconnection instructions and inspect only the user-accessible points shown in the manual. Don't run it while inspecting, and take care around sharp debris. Use the instructions for your fitted cleaner head before removing a brush bar. Reassemble everything securely before use. Pulsing is described in the manual's blockage and automatic-cut-out guidance. It does not establish that this particular post-wash event was harmless or that the motor is undamaged.
Stop before buying parts or trying a reset trick
Contact Dyson if pulsing persists after a fully dry filter, correct refitting and the permitted blockage checks, or earlier if water may have reached electrical parts. A machine that no longer responds needs its own assessment. A replacement filter cannot be assumed to repair a wet main body.
Have this short record ready:
- Exact model and serial number
- What was washed: filter only, bin, cleaner head or main body
- Water temperature and any detergent used
- How and where the filter dried, and for how long
- Whether it ran normally before washing
- Which lights appeared, whether they flashed, and whether the machine still responds
- Any visible damage or possible liquid exposure
Dyson asks owners to have the machine and serial number available when contacting support. The rest of this checklist helps describe the sequence without deliberately reproducing a potentially damaging fault. Dyson V10 support and servicing
